Allotments

Posted by Roger Mazillius on Saturday, 20th March 2010, 17:31

Contrary to SL’s postings on the Community Centre thread to the effect that nothing worthwhile, apart from possibly rice, could be grown on the site, he obviously is not aware of Northwood Village Produce Association.

If he was and if he followed newspaper reports etc he would have known that TWO allotment holders won FIRST PRIZES for their vegetables in last summer’s Annual Village Show. Further others won 2nd and 3rd prizes, this in a year when by general agreement, the vegetable classes were probably of the highest ever standard.

None of this unfortunately supports his claim that in effect this is a totally useless site for allotments!

Proud to have my named say, Roger Mazillius

PS Needless to say, the prize crops were really GROWN on these allotments!

Just to say “Thanks” Mr. Wrinkly. Wisdom comes with age! Also to Mr. C.

Reference the post from ‘Wrinkly Skinner’

Understandably you are ‘fed up’ with the constant haranguing that is very prevalent on this forum, Rightly so. Unfortunately ‘forum’ is another word for ‘soap-box’ without doubt posters on here make full use of the facility.

The current vehicle for people to hang their hat is the Allotment scheme. Clearly there is no problem with any of the allotment holders, whose work is beyond criticism. As with all segments of life there are people who have an inbuilt ability to cause a response no matter what they do or say. Sadly that is a facet of human psychophysiology that can never be changed.

However…Debate is better than surly silence, and without doubt colours other wise drab lives.

Communication with fellow humans is one our greatest assets.

As an old Northwood resident, I am fed up with all this whining and moaning about a few allotments. What is the matter with local people keen to grow their own going on a local site which they knew was flooded in the winter to successfully grow their own crops during the rest of the year.

None of the moaners is denying the claim that the standard of crops grown was so high, they won prizes and all the plots are let for the rest of the time they are there. Also, has it not been said that the owner of the site had other reasons not to continue with the yearly arrangement, not the flooding and that if she hadn’t, the plots would continue to be fully let ad infinitum.

I don’t need to defend the local councillor nor all the other parish ones who agreed the letting, I think they can do that for themselves. But what really gets my goat is your attitude towards the growers because believe me you are having a go at them for having the temerity (I think that’s the word for it) to actually go there knowing about the flooding and still growing lovely crops.

Is it not you who need to move on?

So right KMA… what is it that RM has difficulty coming to terms with?… people who express views opposed to any thing he is involved with?
First it was some body signed John Doe, then GC, then Steve L. and many more in threads long gone.
The allotment project is a worthy one, but there were errors of judgement made, allotment holders were ecstatic when the project was started. Some will continue till the Autumn 2010 though the bottom line is all that effort will have been for now’t!
With respect try listening to what people are articulating…then think ‘do I understand what they are saying?’

Give your self a rest Roger, take up painting or some other hobby, time has moved on…so should you!

I can only reply to KMA that under this site’s admin. rules, this subject had to be moved from the Community Centre thread and that I did mention this in my last post on that thread as there was the matter of replying to SL’s inaccurate allotment comments.

Further I have explained time and time again, both on this forum and in my Northwood News reports and in my recent letter to the County Press that the land owner had other reasons for not renewing the annual tenancy.

In addition to this 18 of the 20 plot holders are continuing there until the end of September and the two vacant plots are relet.

Why KMA persists in claiming that “the ground is not suitable for vegetable growing”, when I have clearly reported that in the first year alone two first prizes were won for vegetables grown there, is beyond belief.

Still “there’s nowt so queer as folks” as they say.

    Finally, who’s picking on who?

More in despair than hope. Roger Maz.

  6. KMA says:

what a surprise a new thread and our councilor is off again picking on people like Steve L.
Why don’t you give it a rest and except people are entitled to believe that this water logged field was the wrong place to start Northwood allotments.
If not why are they moving.
I agree with steves comment, this area has always been wet and waterlogged ground is not suitable for vegetable growing, except if we are lucky and get a dry summer like last year.

Thanks JH. The opening sentence seems grammatically ok to me, ie I am making my comments and signing my name.

Thanks also re magnanimity. I couldn’t agree more but will SL?

    Cheers, Roger Maz

Congratulations to those allotments holders that have worked hard to achieve good quality crops from their allotted land.
I hope other land is found soon within Northwood village.

The comment by Steve L in another thread, re the sitting of the allotments is valid in my opinion, in so far that the site was, and is risky due to the water table. No matter that the amount of rain that fell during the preceding period was fairly high, the area will always be prone to fluctuating water tables.

Why is it that people cannot show magnanimity instead of trying to verbally bully those who have dissecting views?.
