When will the rice be gathered in from the paddy fields?
Was it not realised these fields always have and always will flood.
I feel sorry for those that still have crops to harvest.

Thanks Withyskinner. I am on the case having already tried three different options.
We all knew the existing site did flood in the winter, although to be fair, this winter has been particularly bad in this regard with extremely heavy November rainfall being compounded by the heavy January snow.
We have had professional drainage advice at an on-site inspection and whilst it is possible to land drain the site, the cost of this is going to be prohibitive.
Despite all these problems, 18 of our 20 plot holders want to continue for the next growing season until the end of September.
In the meantime we thank all plot holders for their hard work and enthusiasm over the past year and hope we can find another site.

yes its true water wont run up hill unless you pump it, and thats expensive. I can remember as a kid sat up stairs on the 1A bus looking down at that cottage thinking, what a big pond around that house.
I doubt very much if it would be possible to drain…………….after all its on top of what are effectively ‘gravel pits’.

The real shame in this matter is that one of the very few issues that has become a reality, are the Allotments. In my opinion it seems the local council can’t get this right? What’s the betting it ends up costing us all money! or need it?
The only person too benefit from improved drainage would be the land owner. Let them pay, and if it means extra levy for the land on which the Allotments are sited on …so be it…the allotments holders would have to stand the increases in their rent.

Such a shame. Anyone that has ever driven past that area would have noticed the regular flooding around the old cottage and farm. The only solution is to move the allotments elsewhere. Withyskinner
Absolutely agree that local history will confirm that the water table is extremely near to the surface in that area.
That poses the question…who is going to pay for ‘Land Drainage’ I for one do not feel the precept should bear the cost. What do others feel about this issue?

Seems as though the land owner has the answer…………………close them down. Still, I am positive that Roger will find an even better allotment area. Withyskinner
