Bus Fares up 25%

It’s fantastic, Southern Vectis are supporting the troubled car industry.

“The £2 single ticket increased to £2.50 as part of Southern Vectis’s annual fare rise..”

Is this the first annual rise this year? I seem to remember a couple last year!

I recently paid £5.50 for the privilege of travelling from Horseshoe to Newport Bus depot and back (£2.50 one way, £3.00 the other??). Their pricing never makes any sense to me – And I always end up with the grumpiest driver on SVs books, and no, I don’t try and pay with a £20 note!
As the old saying goes “At least Dick Turpin wore a mask when he was robbing people”.

yes I agree at the moment the single short journey fare is a good earner but for how long?
Today I would rather walk a mile than pay £2.50 for a few hundred yards of bus travel but if they make it affordable Im not that mean so I wouldn’t use it!
As for free buses yes I am all in favour of free transport for the elderly, most pensioners are on a fixed income but 60 is to young for the free early morning buses, and how many catch them to work?. Was that thought out properly, I dont think so. I dont see why a 60 year old in full employment should use some of my council tax to help pay his bus fare. Its bad enough that a guy on 40 thousand plus still gets at 60 the fuel handout, when some older people are frightened to turn the heat up. In case your wondering Im in my fifties so I can see if they do get stopped I wont get them!

Yes, but the council pays (i.e. we pay) SV a percentage of the fares not collected from the ‘free passengers’. A £1.50 ticket would not be good for SV as these short journeys are the cash cow I suspect. Looks like we are set for an upward spiral until government changes policy.

Yeah its funny, petrol prices have dropped and we are told will hold at this level for a time. Wages are not increasing more than a few % this year for most of us and I assume thats bus drivers as well. Southern Vectis are getting more people on the buses than they have had for years, albeit due to the free over 60 passes. So why have they just increased the single ticket by 25%. Don’t they realise if they had a single fare of £ 1.50 they would fill the empty buses with people that don’t normally use them. I wonder if the reason they don’t have cheap fares is they could never cope with the extra people. If they try a system where you get the tickets before you board the bus and stamp it on the bus yourself. These bus company’s trust the passengers to play by the rules but have regular checks and heavy on the spot fines for those with no ticket. This system fills the buses where its used and doesn’t slow down the service. Is this to easy or is S.V. just greedy.
