A regular exhibitor at Ventnor Botanic Garden for several years, Island ceramic artist Andrew Dowden will be showing his work in the recently refurbished Garden Gallery.

Andrew was inspired to take up ceramics while watching a bowl being thrown on a wheel, during research for a book on Isle of Wight pottery. His distinctive and unique contemporary pieces are all handmade. Hand-carving and surface texture are his main areas of interest, with shape and form being more important than function.

Andrew’s designs have many influences, resulting in clay interpretations inspired by engineering and machinery, architecture, archaeology and nature. A limited palette of glazes and slips are used, allowing the colour of the clay body to become an integral part of the surface design.

Hand-built, sculptural standing forms, tile panels and ceramic wall plaques will be on show in the Garden Gallery at Ventnor Botanic Garden, from Friday 2nd to Monday 5th August, 10am to 5pm.

Andrew will be in attendance throughout the exhibition which has free admission and free parking.
