Harry Cheek – help and information wanted!

Posted by Lee Cheek on Sunday, 25th December 2011, 19:34

I am looking for any information that anyone might have on HARRY CHEEK, who was a well-known Northwood character.
A greengrocer and nurseryman living in Wyatts Lane, he also had a mobile (horse and cart) fruit and veg round in Northwood, and of course Harry Cheek Gardens is named after him.
Any photographs, memorabilia, anecdotes or just memories and stories of this colourful character would be gratefully received.

Please contact me by telephone or email:

Thank you

    Hi Lee,

Your request is now years old, but I thought I would just let you know, my partner is a lady called Tracey Logan. She is a grand-daughter of Harry’s (and of his first wife Eva) and has very fond memories of him. I will get her to have a look at the replies you have so far…very interesting.

      Hi

This is really strange, I was googling Harry Cheek and your post came up. I’m Harry’s granddaughter Sam, Lee’s sister. I’ve often wondered how Tracey and Kenndel are.
Would love to hear from them. Please let them know that they can contact me on the following email address samh2110@hotmail.com

      Regards

      Sam Carter (Cheek)

I remember Harry from Island football. He nearly single-handedly I think ran Northwood F.C.. for many years. I guess he died around 1983/4. He was a lovely man.

I bought his large collection of signed footballers’ photographs at a Pittis auction in Newport around then and am still the proud owner of the collection. Roger Mazillius

  3. Dudley Denham says:

I am Dudley Denham. My family lived on the Isle of Wight for generations. I lived with my parents at 98 Nodes Road during the 1940′s and 1950′s. I went to Northwood Primary School and Harry Cheek was a well known character at that time. I have only anecdotal and hazy information but it may be relevant to your enquiry. I was a ‘Wolf Club’, and we were prominent as a group. We held annual fetes which involved sprint races and the so called ‘ round the square race’. The race was from the Scout Hut along Wyatts Lane, up Oxford Street, then left along Nodes Road, down Pallance Road and back to Wyatts Lane. There was a prize for the winner donated by Harry. I together with a few friends in full cub uniform decided to do the race – we were about 8 or 9 years old. We completed the race and although we did not win he gave us each 2/6d.

The other thing I remember was the polio outbreak and Harry’s daughter contracted the disease. The school was shut down. My parents were particularly anxious because I used to sit next to her at school

  4. Mrs J.E.Walder says:

Hi I remember my late Ma-in-law Mrs Clara Morgan talking about him quite a bit. I believe they were close neighbours .I would also say try Colin or Joy Pritchett in wyatts lane in the house next door to the scouts hut where i think the Pritchett’s live. Sadly my own husband is no longer alive or he would have been able to help.
