Why spend all this money on new bins etc. I am sure the old way was as good. If I don’t get the right rubbish in the correct bin what happens, not a jobs-worth with a clip board shouting at me I hope.

Anyone miss the collection this morning? A bit earlier than last week around here. Soon after 7:00, and before a lot of bins were put out. Oh well, only another fortnight to wait. At least it is not smelly waste for four weeks as it will be when you go on holiday in the summer.
Unless a new system was introduced, new E.U. landfill rules meant we would face fines of around £300,000 a year for landfill instead of recycling. OK there have been teething problems in some cases and some areas but it was a huge task covering every Island household and determining who could take the bins or who had to have bags only.
From feedback so far, whilst there have been some justifiable criticisms, these have been very much in the minority as most Islanders understand the importance of recycling the millions of tons of rubbish we produce each year.
Also it does make you think, perhaps for once, just how much of our everyday consumables can be recycled. In the very recent past most households just chucked most of their rubbish into the black bags! I’d say we are now doing pretty well in the recycling stakes!
Regards, Cllr Roger Mazillius.
“Can this be recycled?”
A question being posed in households across the village and Island at the moment…
… or at least those households that were not missed out when the council-commissioned mainland firm distributed the bins…
Tetra paks were initially advised as recyclable by the council, as was shredded paper, now both are apparently non-recyclable.
The level of food contamination acceptable on recyclables varies depending on what council communication you read, and the wheelie-bin garden waste service that was cited was apparently cancelled before it started.
Given that we are told recycling will be carried out at a state-of-the-art mainland facility, you might even expect some items marked “Not Recycled” to be wanted, as perversely, “Not recycled” merely means less than 15% of people have access to recycling facilities for these items.

Anyone else confused?
They will be a bigger eyesore than any Island ‘Windfarm’ !!
I think it’s a “Rubbish” idea but then who am I to complain, I only pay my Council Tax. The interesting thing is they cut back the collection staff a few months ago as it only takes a few secs to chuck a bin bag in the lorry as they pass the gate. Now we will see them stop, man-handle a huge bin, place it on the lifting gear on the back of the lorry, tip and then replace the bin. What I would love to know is did the “Team” that came up with the last “Rubbish” idea get a bonus for cutting down on the cost of “Rubbish” collection, if so are they going to give it back? We know the answer of course and it would be funny if it didn’t cost money and peoples’ jobs.
