We’re in the season for award ceremonies. In the first two weeks of February we had the BAFTA and the BRIT awards. In the last week of February there was another one; world famous, big and glamorous. The international press were present; there were headlines in the papers and leaders on the TV news bulletins as the Oscar winners were announced. But there’s another award ceremony going on across the country this month, which is just as important. It’s lower key; the honours are generally awarded in private and may well be burnt toast and a messy kitchen rather than a gold statuette. I’m referring, of course, to Mothers’ Day or, to use the traditional term, Mothering Sunday. And if you’re interested in word games did you know that one of the words you can make from Mothering Sunday is house-train – which reminds me of the time a teacher gave her class of 7 year-olds a lesson on the magnet and what it does. The next day when she was revising the work she said: “My name has six letters. The first one is ‘m.’ I pick up things. What am I?” Quick as a flash, one young man answered ‘mother’. Does it ring a bell?

But there’s another word that comes from Mothering Sunday – nourishment. It’s something we all need and to which we can all respond, whatever the source for mothering is given in many shapes and forms. Yes it comes through family, but we find it also in neighbours, colleagues, friends, those who have supported, fed and encouraged us in our lives, teaching us how to live and what is important. Today is an opportunity to remember and give thanks for all who have mothered us and nourished us over the years. Let’s take a moment also to say thanks to God the creator who has given us life and wants us to continue with him in abundant life.

Lyn.
