I have subscribed to “Navy News” for many years now. In the June issue there was a picture of HM Submarine Tireless returning to Plymouth after a ten-month deployment, which is the longest submarine deployment for ten years. The article, about nine column inches in all, centred on the boat and some of the things it had done since leaving Plymouth on July 9th 2010. However, in a small part of the picture can be seen the tug used to manoeuvre the submarine into the dock. The name of the tug was “Faithful.” This vessel wasn’t referred to in the article, nor was there any reason to do so, yet I thought to myself that it was playing a key role in getting the submarine to its final destination.

In our lives there are many people who are like that tug; they act as our faithful helpers, often avoiding the limelight yet pleased to be there when needed. They are dependable and can be called on at those crucial times in our lives when support is required, perhaps in times of crisis when we don’t know to whom we can go, someone to share a particular joy or sorrow, a listening ear maybe. In all of this they are there. Such people are in the literal sense a “God-send,” that is knowingly or (mostly) unknowingly they are used by God in his goodness to be his presence. In the Bible we read that new every morning, great is God’s faithfulness. He shows it in a number of ways and one of his ways is through people such as the readers of this article.

The article was headlined “Tireless by name – and nature” which can be used as a gentle reminder to us that God never tires or gets weary in his faithfulness.

God’s continued blessings on all of you.

Keith Adlam
