NORTHWOOD COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP REPORT

As stated in last month’s Northwood News, we welcomed Mrs Mary Ellis as our speaker. She told us of her experiences as a pilot during the Second World War, delivering various aircraft to many airfields. When the pilots were given their assignment for the day, they had no idea what make or model of aircraft they were going to deliver. It could be a Spitfire or even a Wellington bomber. They had basic training on five aircraft. The rest they had to look up in the book they were issued. There was no radio in the plane and the only navigation was a map they carried with them. They had to look out for places, such as railway lines and main roads to navigate their way to their destination. They had their own uniform and had to carry the parachute on their back. Mrs Ellis told us of one occasion she delivered a rather large plane and the Officer asked her where the pilot was. She replied that she was the pilot. He did not believe her and had the plane searched. He said that that particular plane took a crew of five people and could not understand how a female had managed the task. It was a very enjoyable talk and hopefully Mrs Ellis will visit us again.

At the end of March, the Partnership held the Annual General Meeting. This resulted in Ron Willis being elected as Chairman, Alan Chick as Vice-Chairman and myself as Secretary/Treasurer.
