WARD REPORT – JUNE 2015

.
At last the Pallance Road works are finished – after some 6 months duration! The main reason for the protracted delay in completing the works being the unexpected relay of broadband to the lower section of Pallance Road, and then the reinstatement work that BT had done being condemned as substandard and having to be done again! This is such a basic failure that it makes me concerned that there may be other incidents of such substandard work across the Island, especially with the scale of the broadband work being carried out. So, I will ask the questions.
.
Another concern is the repeated incidence of sewers being blocked and flooding onto the road and property, after road works. As far as I am aware, this happened in Pallance Lane and twice in Pallance Road, so the risk should be predictable and measures taken to avert it if the blockages are associated with the resurfacing works. Again, I will ask the questions.
.
A local case of damage to a vehicle due to unmarked pot holes, and the seeming difficulty in getting just settlement has been brought to my attention, and I wondered if there are any other incidents where residents feel they have not been fairly treated in this regard. Perhaps you would let me know?
.
You will all by now be aware of my efforts to tie up emerging thinking between Health and Police, regarding how our mental processes can affect our wellbeing, physical health and mind-set. The IW Police have proved, in their innovative Serenity programme, the worth of addressing people’s emotional and mental wellbeing as a root cause of crime. The same phenomena is increasingly being brought to realisation in Health, with the Vanguard roll-out, My Life a Full Life and the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) initiative, amongst others. Now we have a link in education, right on our own doorstep, in Northwood Primary School, where the determined leadership and enlightened thinking of their progressive headmistress, is seeking to embrace cutting edge performance delivery through the world-leading British organisation that was behind the phenomenal success of our Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
.
Professor Steve Peter’s programme ( http://chimpmanagement.com/index.html ) is tailored to schools, and the children understand it immediately and love it. The thinking, in a different guise, is the same core that is underpinning the revolution in Policing and Health. This is fantastic news and it adds to bringing life to Community Wellbeing in Northwood, so I shall be doing everything that I can to ensure the delivery and success of this initiative.
.
On a similar vein, I am told by Lanes End Primary, that there is a need for people to mentor some of their pupils. This is an important and meaningful service that this innovative and caring school offer, that proves of much benefit and worth. On behalf of the school, I would like to ask the question of Northwood residents if anyone might be willing to devote a few hours on a regular basis to benefit a child at Lanes End. If so, please contact Nicky Domoney on caf-dept@lanesendpri.iow.sch.uk or phone 01983 293233 for the main switchboard.
