REPORT – DECEMBER 2009 / JANUARY 2010

VILLAGE GREEN

The October meeting to decide the way forward regarding the application for village green status for the field between Wyatts Lane and Pallance Road containing the public footpath overwhelmingly voted to continue with the application and to claim village green status for the whole of the field.

An independent village green expert has been appointed to conduct a public hearing at County Hall during the week commencing 8th February 2010. He has now issued wide-ranging directions for the hearing which will take up much of my time over the next two months.

More additional evidence has been offered to me, for which I am most grateful. The Inspector has directed that both parties must file their cases no later than 21 days before the hearing. So if you have any evidence supporting the unrestricted use of the field for recreational purposes over say the last 30 years which you have not raised with me, please contact me on 01983 295556, email roger.mazillius@iow.gov.uk or write to me at 21 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT as soon as possible.

I will update everyone in my January Report and in the meantime many thanks again to my supporters, particularly Jacquie Pearce, for their invaluable assistance to date.

ROAD WORKS

By the time you read this I expect the long-running British Gas pipeline installation on the Newport Road by the prisons and the works at the Stag Lane junction to be completed. May I thank residents for their stoicism and understanding whilst all these necessary works were completed.

One point of interest that has sometimes been raised with me is the apparent lack of workmen on the sites at certain times. The answer is usually that the trench infilling and concrete layer has been carried out leaving a clear 24 hours necessary to properly dry out the concrete before laying the final bitumen/tarmac top coats.

WOODSIDE CLOSE

May I thank the residents of this Close for offering to replant the two places in the paved area where trees had died. The Council contractors duly removed the dead trees and roots with the minimum of displacement, leaving those caring residents to replant and leave this area neat and tidy and “green”. My renewed thanks to Don Harrison and his team for their community spirit and action.

BAE SYSTEMS PLANNING APPLICATION
NEWPORT ROAD / THREE GATES ROAD SITE
APPLICATION NUMBER P/01589/09

This major application for full planning consent for an ALDI food store with associated parking, landscaping and balancing pond, vehicular access from Three Gates Road plus outline consent for commercial/industrial development also with vehicular access from Three Gates Road has now been filed and both Northwood Parish Council and Cowes Town Council will be considering the application at their mid-November Planning meetings.

The I.W. Council Planning Committee will hear the application either in December or January and residents will have been able to make their views known in the usual way. I will be reminding residents who log on to northwoodvillage.org.uk of this and the two dates for the local Councils’ meetings. I will also be reporting further in my January Report.

In the meantime I look forward to hearing from you with your views about this important application.

RAINWATER HARVESTING

At this time of year when so much rain falls it is not surprising that rainwater butts, tanks etc. fill up so quickly. Of course as well as being useful for garden and greenhouse watering in the summer, this “free” water can also be used for a variety of other uses depending on how keen you are to “save the planet” e.g. car washing, toilet flushing, cleaning garden tools etc. Indeed it is estimated that rainwater can replace around one third of each person’s clean water requirements annually!

I don’t know about that but I do appreciate having my four water butts full come the dry season! Here we have local experts Engenius to advise on most energy and other environmentally friendly steps you can take to reduce your carbon footprint. Tel: 01983 247981 for further information.

ISLAND INSULATION SCHEME

Further to my report last month, residents who would like to arrange a free no obligation home survey can book this direct on iwight.com/islandinsulation or phone trading standards on 01983 823370 for further information. The street-by-street thermal imaging process will take place during 16th – 29th November. This will build a picture of heat losses from homes which should prove of real interest to residents considering home or additional home insulation.

SEASONAL GREETINGS

Jill and myself send the warmest of personal Christmas and New Year greetings to all residents. Have a happy, safe and peaceful 2010.

As usual I am always available throughout the year to deal with any concerns or matters you may wish to raise with me.

Best wishes

Roger.
