Cycle track works extended

The drainage problems on the popular Cowes to Newport cycleway have been found to be more extensive than initially thought and the current works to resolve flooding will be extended by further two weeks to allow the scope of the scheme to be extended to address those.

The work is now scheduled to finish on Friday 11 December. While this additional work is carried out the diversion via Stag Lane and Horsebridge Hill will remain in place.

The £30,000 scheme involves reconstructing the drainage system underneath the former railway line just north of Dodnor Lane in an area that has become particularly prone to flooding in recent years with up to a metre of water rendering the track impassable on occasions.

Peter Hayward, Isle of Wight Council Head of Highways and Transport said: "Whilst it is disappointing to have found these problems I'm pleased that we are able to extend the scope of the scheme to resolve these now when fewer people are using the route. I realise that this extension of time may cause some further inconvenience for cyclists although I am sure that they will appreciate the improvements being made."

The work that started on 26 October, has been programmed outside of the busier main summer season and the riverside footpath is not affected by the work.

The Cowes to Newport route is used for around 57,000 cycle journeys each year and this will be the second major scheme carried out by the IW Council to improve this route in recent years.

The scheme underlines the council's determination to provide a top-class network of cycleways and maintain the lonely planet assessment as one of the best locations for cycling in the world.
