Histree Trail Project

The Histree Trail Project is now well underway, working with the community to identify the Island’s most magnificent trees. The project officer is currently visiting sites across the Island with volunteers and recording candidate trees of significant age, size or interest, and any associated local heritage.

The project officer explains: “We are looking for impressive trees and the stories that go with them. We want to know about the trees within your area and the things you know about them. If there is anybody who feels they know of a magnificent tree or interesting heritage tale, fact or fiction that might be linked to a tree, then please contact me!

For example in and around your area, there are of course the wonderful trees of Northwood Park, which has a particularly fine collection of species of oak including the Cork oak and the Lucombe oak which is a hybrid between the Turkey and the Cork oak. Perhaps there are trees within the park with a special local significance or story attached? Northwood Cemetery too contains some fantastic trees. We have heard that some of the trees may have originally been surplus stock following the Victorian landscaping at Osborne Estate; if anybody knows anymore it would be great to hear from you.”

The Heritage Lottery funded project aims to gather information on trees from both rural and urban settings. The gathered local knowledge will be utilised to develop a picture of distribution of the most spectacular specimens, and generate a series of walking/cycling trails across the Island.

If you would like to contribute further information regarding the history of the trees of Northwood, or provide any other details that might be included within the project, please telephone the Parks and Countryside section at the Isle of Wight Council on 01983 823893 or email histreetrail@iow.gov.uk
