Medham W.I.

Northwood W.I. began in 1926, when very few married women went out to work,
holding meetings in the afternoon.
By the 60s and 70s things had changed and an evening Institute, Medham,
was formed to cater for women who couldn’t attend meetings during the day.
The two are not in competition and members actively support the events of
both. In fact some belong to both!

Medham W.I. meets on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7.30 pm at the W.I.
Hall and we are a friendly group. We welcome visitors to come along to any
meeting to see what we do and, hopefully, join as a member. Speakers, who
are engaged for more than half of the meetings, present topics which are
varied, some funny, some educational and others where we learn new crafts.
Currently we have 33 members. This year our Summer outing was to Bath and
the American Museum. In a dry, sunny month we managed to choose a wet
day but it didn’t dampen our spirits. Bath is a lovely city and the Museum, a
large country house set in acres of superb grounds, was well worth a visit. It
included an exhibition of early American quilts which were quite stunning.
In September many of us paid a visit to Parkhurst Prison and its Heritage
Centre. It was a fascinating presentation and we learned of the many changes
in its history.

What has now become an annual event is the garden party held by one of our
members in her lovely garden. We hold a raffle, where everyone wins a prize,
have tea, sample delicious home made cakes and generally enjoy ourselves.
Our fund-raising events are the Spring Fair and Autumn Bazaar where
everyone pitches in to help. These are generally great fun.

If you are looking for friendship, fun and wish to learn something new, do come
to one of our meetings where you will be made most welcome. Our Annual
Meeting is on Nov 14th and on Dec 12th we will be holding our Christmas Party why not join us?.
