Just what generations of people living in Cowes, Gurnard and Northwood did in their leisure time is the subject of Cowes Heritage’s next exhibition, ‘COWES AT PLAY’.
Due to take place at Cowes Combined Clubs, adjacent to The Parade, between 6th – 28th October 2007, the event will feature the following subjects: SPORT – netball, golf, football and cricket; YOUTH AND COMMUNITY – scouts/cubs, brownies/guides, sea cadets, Girls Brigade; WIs, Townswomen’s Guild, youth clubs; ARTS AND CRAFTS – needlework, model engineering, pub and club games; ENTERTAINMENT – carnivals and May queens, theatre.
Anyone with photographs and other items who can loan items for the displays is asked to contact Cowes Heritage chairman John Groves at 14 Nodes Road, Northwood, Cowes IW PO31 8AB. Tel: 01983 299221.
Cowes Heritage has also agreed to mount an exhibition in Cowes (venue to be announced) to mark the 65th anniversary of the defence of Cowes by the Polish destroyer Blyskawica. Special events are planned by the local Blyskawica association over the Bank Holiday 4/5/6th May, although the exhibition will last longer.
In the wake of the successful ‘WHITE'S OF COWES’ exhibition last year, Cowes Heritage is backing the production of a book featuring employees of the J Samuel White shipyard. It is written by Island author Brian Greening, who has kindly agreed that all profits should accrue to Cowes Heritage.
