Week of community activities in Cowes and East Cowes

Between Friday 3rd and Thursday 9th April 2009, Isle of Wight Council and its partners including NHS, police, the fire service and youth probation services will be in the towns hosting a variety of events, activities and exercises.

On Saturday 4th April, dog owners are invited to East Cowes Town Hall where they can access free dog obedience training between 14.00 – 17.00. This will be held in conjunction with Isle of Wight Dog Training Society, Isle of Wight Council's dog wardens and Environment and Neighbourhood Officer Gill Mulcahy. The same dog training will be carried out on Wed 8th April at Solent Middle School between 16.00 – 19.00.

Dog owners can also benefit from a large discount on the cost of micro chipping their pets. This can be done by experts for just £5. It is available in East Cowes in the town hall on both Saturday 4th April and in The Cut in Cowes between 09.00 – 14.00 on Wednesday 8th April, additionally 16.00 – 19.00 at Solent Middle School.

On Monday 6th April, Isle of Wight Council's road safety trailer will be parked near the floating bridge from 10.00 to 16.00. Free security bike marking and cycling awareness information will be available.

The week will also see the probation service carrying out various tasks in the area, including painting the outside of the Floating Bridge waiting room in East Cowes and bollard painting in Cowes High Street. Catch 22, a youth probation service, will be carrying out bench painting in Gurnard.

Fire fighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service will provide a demonstration of a chip pan fire on The Parade from 09.00 onwards on Tuesday 7th April, and will offer advice on fire safety throughout the week whilst located in The Cut.

The IWC Road Safety Team and Traffic Police will be providing education and demonstrations on The Parade from 09.00 on Tuesday 7th April.

Police officers from Hampshire Constabulary will be giving out Smartwater advice and free shed alarms on Wednesday 8th April from 10.00, from a dedicated trailer in The Cut in Cowes.

Teenagers under the age of 18 are invited to a PURE disco event at Cowes Yacht Haven from 19.30 on Friday 3rd April and there is an Open Mike Night being held by Cowes Students on 6th April in The Anchor Pub beginning at 18.30.

The IWC Youth Service will be running organised events in the youth centre including a junior five-a-side football competition on Thursday 9th April, introduction to Tai Chi and fitness classes.

The UKSA (United Kingdom Sailing Academy) in conjunction with the youth service are offering the use of its pool for swimming activities and kayak training for just £1 on various days of the week.
