At the weekend I was walking down the Nodes Road to Newport Road footpath, when near the bottom (by the BAE Systems factory) to my surprise I came face-to-face with a horse complete with rider.
There wasn’t a lot of room for me to squeeze past. I think that horses are not supposed to be on footpaths, but didn’t give the rider a ticking off as I don’t know if it’s true or not.
In my opinion the footpath will get cut-up pretty quickly if this is going to be a regular shortcut for horses.

Horse and rider now regularly using footpath around 4:50pm most days.
Not sure whether to challenge the rider, politley, or not?
I have tried to find out what the penalty is for riding a horse along a public footpath but have so far failed, but anyway how could it be enforced when there probably needs to be more than one witness and a means of tracking down the culprit afterwards. No-one ever seems to see where they come from or where they go to. Short of following them I cannot see how they will ever be stopped or even officially reprimanded. I wonder if it might be worth asking Councillor Mazillius if he would raise the subject in his Northwood News report – the message might then be seen by the culprits.
Exactly a year after the first posting on the subject of horses on footpaths and 2 female riders are regularly using the FOOTpath between Nodes and Newport Road again, and the pavement along Nodes Road.
1 brown horse, 1 white, and 1 of the riders wears a pink sleeveless body warmer.
I live pretty much opposite the path and used to walk it regularly until the other day, but won’t anymore as I don’t like horses and don’t want to encounter them on a narrow FOOTpath with my little girl.

Much more annoying than horses ‘off’ of a main road as that is a good thing in my opinion…………..however the dog doos person needs to be ‘photographed’ ………..then named and shamed BJS
This is almost as annoying as the considerate local resident that keeps leaving bags of dog mess on the pavement along Nodes Road.
Disgusting!
Well it’s still happening, yesterday a horse and rider turned from Newport Road into the footpath – I drove to Three Gates Road, dropped off a parcel and continued round to the Nodes Road end of the footpath and the pair were just emerging on to Nodes Road where they crossed and mounted the pavement. No idea if they left a deposit, but if they did I’m sure someone will find it in the dark.

I see a lot of fresh hoof prints have appeared over the easter weekend down the lane, particularly in the (not surprisingly) cut-up wet section at the bottom. The message obviously isn’t getting through.

Could you please give a description of the horse and rider and the date(s) and time(s). This would be most helpful.
Best wishes, Roger Maz.
As an update – Horse lady is still active up the footpath.
Mrs Northwood
I have now had confirmation that horses are prohibited (along with mounted cyclists) from these public footpaths. This is particularly important when,as in the case of this CS10,the path is relatively narrow.
I have been asked to pass on any intelligence which would help identify these horserider(s).
I have also asked for this particular path to be surveyed again with a view to laying road planings or the like to improve the wet/muddy parts.
Best wishes, Roger M.
Thanks for all these postings. I am pretty sure that horses are prohibited from these public FOOTPATHS but will get a definitve opinion on this on Monday and post it thereafter.
Best wishes, Roger Mazillius
Well, yesterday (Wednesday) a horse walked down Nodes Road on the PAVEMENT and then headed down the Newport Road footpath. I now know who the offender is – should I name and shame them??!
On a serious note, should we be getting Roger to remind Northwood-ites via his report in the Northwood News that horses should not be on pavements or using footpaths, we won’t single anyone out then.
I know it sounds pretty petty stuff, but horses are quite unpredictable beasts and I don’t fancy being kicked if we meet down the footpath!
Wow ! Barb……………I couldnt agree more.
Roads are for cars etc……………..not livestock, without lights and poo sacks.
Im happy that they may need to use a main road to get from ‘here to there’, but some seem to just ride around and around the roads. And its time they had to pick up their own poo………….and display lights when lighting is dim.
I agree with the other post with regards to poo is poo if it was a dog you would have to pick it up and as for them pooing on the road my husband rides a scooter to work and his scooter slipped under him after going over a pile of poo on the main rd,why on earth do they have to go on roads anyway? there are plenty of fields around, ive even seen horses up on the field in venner avenue where the childrens play area is,why are these owners of the horses allowed to do so?

The Ramblers Association seem to have a good reference document, at:

The point in question is no. 10, and perhaps pedal cyclists should read no. 11 as they are often to be encountered careering down that footpath.

Yes……………I saw the piles of dung along it yesterday. Im not sure why horses are allowed to foul up the roads etc………..poo is poo in my book and if you ride a motor cycle……its just as dangerous as a pot-hole ! I think you might be right regarding horses not being allowed on a ‘footpath’. Any Councillor know the answer ?
