Pallance Cottage

Posted by Mrs Jackie Walder on Sunday, 16th October 2011, 00:01

Hi does anyone know the number of Pallance Cottage, Pallance Road. My late husband was born there in May 1933 and I believe his maternal grandparents, William and Beatrice Jenkins lived there. On his birth certificate it doesn’t give a number.
Thanks for any help

91 and 93 Pallance Cottages are three doors down from the Travellers, 91 had a bottle well in the garden.

How exciting, someone may know who these lads are.I am so keen to know as apart from a cousin in Seaview (and he was younger than my husband and never went to the sea scouts at all) there is no one left that I know of from my late husbands family. I can remember lots of names that my husband spoke of over the years but I wouldn’t have a clue what they looked like.So John you went to school with Ray and Mike that’s great someone remembers them. Ray is retired and lives in Dorset with his wife Pam and is a very keen lawn bowls player and I believe plays for the County.
I hope someone will let me know when the photo is published as I live in Kent

I too look forward to seeing this photograph. I was around myself at the time, and my brother and sister went to school with Ray and Michael. We may well recognise some of the lads in the picture. John Green, London.

I am glad I have found someone who remembers Ray and Michael. Ray is still alive and well and lives just outside Weymouth in Dorset with his wife Pam.
Michael (my late husband) sadly passed away in 2003. The youngest brother David also died this year after a short illness. My husband often talked about his life growing up on the Island and how his Mum (Clara) made him and Ray stand outside the back door when Southampton was bombed and they could read the newspaper by the light of the fires even though it was the middle of the night. Although we lived for most of our married life on the mainland we often returned to 52 Wyatts Lane to his Mum’s house with our children for long weekends and holidays. Both of my daughters grew up knowing such a lot about the Island and for the past few years I return every year with my youngest daughter and her five children in August for a fortnight’s holiday. It’s a beautiful place and anyone who lives there is very lucky.

Hi Barry, at the moment the photo is with the County Press office and they have promised they will return it to me.I have searched the Northwood church data base for the burial of Kezia Jenkins died Gurnard 1870 aged 104 but there is no apparent entry for her or her husband James who died in 1862 aged 78. he was the farmer at Dukes Farm who I am trying to research.he was my late husbands 4x gt grandfather.Kezia certainly lived to a ripe old age and cause of deaath was ‘natural decay’ I will send the photo on to the Village website as soon as I get it back.If published in the County Press I am hoping that someone will recognise some of the lads in the oicture as they are mostly from Northwood.
    Cheers Jackie in Kent

Thank you so much for your reply.I have just returned from my holiday on the Island and had the good fortune to be able to talk to a chap called Bernie who works at Northwood Cemetary. He was very helpful to me and showed me where my late husbands relatives were buried .William George Jenkins who lived at no 1 Pallance Cottages was my husbands Grandfather and it was there that my late husband was born in 1933.I also met with one of the ‘Friends of Northwood Cemetary’ that afternoon a very helpful chap called Barry.I showed him a photo taken with the Northwood Seascouts that had my husband and his brother Ray in it .It was taken around I think 1946-7 possibly at Corfe Castle as its a camp photo, and Barry thinks his uncle is in the photo. After speaking to these two very helpful chaps I took their advice and have put the photo into the County Press offices where they said they will try to publish it in the next few weeks under the auspices of a ‘Where are they now ‘ to see if anyone recognises either themselves or anyone in the photo.
My Ma-in-law lived almost opposite the scout hut in Whyatts lane so I am hoping that when published some old ‘Wythyskinner ‘will recognise themselves.
Had a lovely wander around Northwood and it has changed so much since we used to visit in the 1970s.So many new houses and lots of new faces, but that is progress I guess.
My brother-in-law David used to play darts in the ‘Travellers’years ago but he has since moved away from the island to the mainland.
    Still a lovely village though.
    Cheers Mrs Jackie Walder ,Kent
