FROM PRISON

Posted by Admin on 21 March 2008, 12:00 am

From inside a prison wall I write;
my poor dear Mel.
for a strange impulsive act last night,
I’m in a cell:
secret ill that only came to light
too late to stay
contact with this precious lot’s sad plight,
in Holloway.

I conclude with loving evidence;
my dear: Goodbye.
Notwithstanding your indifference,
I love as I
worshipped God, and Father, once when young,
and in love’s cause
took the Host when Eucharist was sung,
within St Paul’s.

A very free translation from Aristide Bruant.
