IN LIGHTER VEIN

When in fullness of time, by the Nation’s decrees,
we relinquish our last basic potion,
tho’ lamenting the loss of a limousine’s ease,
or more thrilling two-wheeled locomotion;
we’ll conform to austerity’s latest ideal,
and to furnish more fuel for “fighters”,
let us make to cognition a fervent appeal
for a substitute item for “lighters”.
With a glass magnifier we’ll focus the sun,
which will concentrate powers effective,
and igniting the matchless weed (pardon the pun),
will conduce to those moods most reflective.
Then reflection sagacious will doubtlessly bring,
(let experience voice no restriction)
the approved Boy Scout method of bent twig and string;
viz, combustion engendered by friction.
If this proves too unwieldy, exploiting the mode
that obtained in those less-favoured ages,
we will transfer a tinder-box to our abode,
there to strike ‘til our want it assuages.
But if glass, twig or flint should all fail, or refuse
cinefaction, the matter’s past joking,
nought remains but the Brains Trust, with pleas to induce
expositions to remedy smoking!
