LINES WRITTEN DURING THE PORTSMOUTH-TO-JOHANNESBURG AIR RACE 1936

From the Portsmouth ’drome in the dawn’s first light,
Vega Gull, Miles Hawk, and Percival Mew
sped through the air in high-speed flight,
to triumph o’er Time on adventure new.

Those fearless men with ice-cool brains,
their engines running hot,
are standing the pace in an epic race,
Halse, Clouston, Llewellyn, and C. W. Scott.

They follow the course of the ancient Nile,
Vega Gull, Miles Hawk and Percival New,
over sterile desert or palm-clad mile,
at a speed that wing-heeled Mercury knew.

These dauntless men with nerves of steel,
their engines running hot,
are killing space over Afric’s face,
Halse, Clouston, Llewellyn, and C. W. Scott.

Note:
Halse – Percival Mew Gull
Clouston – Miles Hawk
Llewellyn – Vega Gull
Scott – Vega Gull
