LUGGAGE IN A WAITING-ROOM

The cases did it – stirred that blood
which links me with the sea, and with a
barque at Valparaiso.
Quite new they were, two grey, two red,
which, labelled P&O bespoke an
affluence, perhaps but recently attained –
this supposition consonant with those
who set them down – a man, his wife,
and son, about to cruise in Canberra.
Had they, too, felt the pull of the seas
beyond their ken? Or were they brochure-
drunk on half-truths admen tell? To me
they seemed to lack the right reaction.
Departure found them blasé. Mute, they
sat and waited – less excited than I,
in youth, entrained for ten-mile trips.
