THE AMARANTH

Spicy carnations of scarlet and cream,
fragments of faery thought culled from a dream;
roses that charm one, in bud or in bloom,
wallflowers’ fragrance full, scenting a room;
incense of lavender, fair London pride,
stately chrysanthemums, blooms that abide;
lilies of purity, chaste, undefiled,
waxen-formed dahlias oft have beguiled;
larkspur, delphinium, memories cling;
daffodil trumpets clear, heralding Spring,
mossy-throned primrose, or cultured jonquil,
treasures of hedgerow vie gardeners’ skill;
transient loveliness, delicate hues,
scorning comparison, whispering, “Chose!”
Louder, but vainly, re-echoes the call,
purple-robed dignity, grace without flaw,
iris, the amaranth, reigns over all.
