Venner Avenue Play Park

Posted by Northwood Parish Council on Tuesday, 8th June 2010, 19:13

The Parish Council, in partnership with the IW Council, have been informed of the success of their application for £50K Play Builder funding, which is available for play areas that cater for the 8 – 13 years age range. The grant will enable the refurbishment of the play equipment on the Venner Avenue Play Park. One criterion of the scheme is that the youth in the area must be consulted on the type of equipment they would like to see in place or retained and just as importantly, what they do not want there.

The Parish Council therefore kindly invites comments/suggestions from any user of the play park, parent or nearby resident to be sent to the Parish Clerk, Mrs Barbara Herbert, stating in what capacity they write.

Mrs Herbert can be contacted at:

11 Wyatts Lane, Northwood, PO31 8QB

I take it thats a “No” Rodger.

Can anyone explain why it is that the VA Play Park has had various squares of protective metal placed on the grass for no immediate purpose. This has taken up valuable play area away from the children during the summer holidays which is the time when it is most used and yet no work has started They have now been there for 5 weeks. An onlooker.

  3. DS says:

A week has passed since this “good news” Roger and it seems that very few people are bothered that the money is still going to be used.
Have you any views on the bus post Roger?

    DS.

  4. Roger Mazillius says:

It has been confirmed, so “Unhappy Mum” should now be “Happy Mum”, that the funding has not been withdrawn and the new Play Park will be going full steam ahead!

Excited, you have hit the nail on the head. It’s been said on this site many times how can a TC or PC judge what we want by such low local feedback?
I can walk around the village and get 2% of the village people to sign a petition on almost anything, but that doesn’t mean the 98% that didn’t sign it, want it.
If our PC wants to do something that I know is a real worry for a large share of the locals, protect what little rural bus service we have from disappearing. We don’t all have cars and although our village has a main road bus route, many of the friends and relatives we visit are not on a main road and these will disappear unless we campaign now, not after SV has removed them. Even Gurnard, just down the road is a long way to travel if you have young children or are a bit on the older side to walk up and down big hills.
I think a voice from our PC on issues like this is what County Hall is waiting for, no noise no pain. The silent majority need to be asked or certain people like to think we are all so happy. So stick out a form in the village as a start, you may be surprised, if you ask us.

Hope you enjoyed your sojourn at the local hostelry Cllr?

But getting away from you and yours for a moment, so there was support from a 100 people when the application for ‘Village Green Status’ was made. Given that there are approx 970 properties in Northwood, each with 2 adults + 2.5 Children(typical family) in each = 1,940 potential voters. These figures formulated with the number of 100 you say assisted, represents only 1.94% gave their support. If you shake out the statistics allowing for one parent families then the figure becomes even smaller.

Finally, support from Parish Council, if my memory serves me correct you were a councillor of said body, little surprising that they voted to give the Village Green Scheme their support when it was being steered by one of their own members.

On my post where I used the phrase ‘majority of residents don’t use the grassed area etc.I believe that comment hold true when backed up by the numbers.

BTW I’m off up the ‘Shoe’ to drool in my glass.

    Excited

  7. Unhappy mum says:

looks like its on hold as the money that was promised has now been taken away by that clown and his nodding dog.
I could save more money thats wasted every year on fat cat salarys.
    Unhappy mum.

  8. Roger Mazillius says:

Calm down dear Excited! It’s only a piece of a grassed field that the vast majority of Northwood residents will never use-(although the under 13s will have a whale of a time!)

It is worth recording that the campaign about the other piece of grassed field was specifically supported by the Parish Council and over 100 local residents, around 50 of whom made statements etc in support and some of whom voluntarily gave freely of their time and expertise to help. That was a classic example of local empowerment which should not be belittled in such a curmudgeonly way.

Off for a walk down to The Travellers. Best wishes, Cllr. Roger Mazillius

Taxpayer – you probably don’t have to worry.

  10. Taxpayer says:

They thought that in Gurnard but now will pay a big chunk of cash every year for the insurance and maintenance of the site.

    Taxpayer.

  11. Excited says:

At last some positive action from the Parish Council, the provision of the facilities planned for the site will be a tremendous play area for local children to enjoy themselves safely.

Who cares about ‘Gordon Brown’ and others who have had their day, or the fight for a piece of grassed field that the vast majority of the Northwood residents never use.

As begrudgingly acknowledged the scheme hasn’t landed on the precept, which is good.

    Excited.

  12. Roger Mazillius says:

This grant was from financial largesse distributed in the last days of Gordon Brown’s idea of prudent economic government. However, congratulations to Parish Clerk Barbara Herbert and I think to at least one previous Parish Councilllor who started the process, that this grant has been won.

The reference to “the village green idea” is way off beam. That was a legal process to protect publicly used land from development, not for use as an equipped play park or the like!

As usual, best wishes to all, Cllr. Roger Mazillius

Thumbs up for a brilliant initiative. Great that the kids will have something new to look forward to in Northwood. Much better than that village green idea and so much better placed, being in the center of the village.

I’ve seen the other facilities in Gurnard/Cowes/Newport and they look brilliant, I wish I was a kid again!

I think this is great news -it will be lovely to see chidren and parents meeting at the park after school and bring a real sense of community.
Please keep dogs out so a fenced area- zip wires are very popular.
Im sure Gurnard are very proud of their new park and it brings people from across the island.

Could the school be involved in planning and designing the area -a great project.

  15. Tax payer says:

It seems strange that Gurnard PC do a play park on the Gurnard Green, then Northwood rec. gets a play park (under-construction) now Venner avenue must have one.
The play park sales team must be working very hard or am I being silly.
I think its good that kids get extra things to play on but times are hard and I think what BJS said is true £50K spent is a lot of money it could wait and other prioritys are in front of this one.
    Tax payer.

  16. BJS says:

Im sure the play equipment could be ‘gold plated’ for £50k…….a few comfortable ‘wooden’ benches around the periphery would be nice (not those cold metal things !) Other than a refurb and the odd ‘addition’ most of that cash would be better redirected towards the upkeep of Northwood House !!! BJS
