COWES HERITAGE
Some forthcoming events:
Due to the reorganisation of schools it was thought appropriate to show a selection of the 2004 "Cowes School Days" exhibition again at Cowes Library, Beckford Road.
It will be available for viewing from August 1st until November 10th during normal opening hours.
Our Autumn exhibition this year will be "Transport Through the Ages" to be held at Northwood House from Saturday 18th October until Sunday 10th November, 10.00am to 4.00pm.
FREE ADMISSION.
If anyone has any old photographs of old forms of transport, but in particular of cycles and/or memorabilia relating to cycles, and would be willing to lend them to us, please contact John Groves 14 Nodes Road, Cowes - Tel: 01983 299221 who will make the necessary arrangements.
As more details emerge these will be well-advertised in Northwood News, in the Village Diary and on this web-page.
FOUR YEARS OF POPULAR EXHIBITIONS
Cowes Heritage was formed in 2002 as a result of a questionnaire seeking opinion as to the support for such an organisation.
As a result of the positive response it was decided to hold a three-week exhibition. So in early 2004 ‘Cowes At War’ was staged at Bonham’s premises in Cowes High Street. Such was the success of the event that it was decided more exhibitions ought to be organised.
A formal committee was formed with an approved constitution, a separate bank account and a planned agenda of future activities.
The subsequent exhibition programme in the years following ‘Cowes at War’ covered: changes in architecture, school days, yachting, J Samuel White’s shipyard and leisure activities. Subject of the next event, in October 2008, will cover all aspects of the history of public transport in the Cowes, Northwood and Gurnard areas.
The exhibitions, all with free admission, would put a big strain on Cowes Heritage’s finances without income from: voluntary contributions, the sale of books and DVDs, and grants from Cowes Town Council, Cowes Business Association and Cowes Community Partnership.
Members are invited to give talks to local organisations and they try to respond to requests for help in matters relating to the heritage of Cowes, including planning issues.
As well as the major exhibitions there are on-going displays at the Beckford Road Library, which are changed at regular intervals.
When called upon for help in forming a ‘Friends of Northwood Cemetery’ group, Cowes Heritage responded - and now that group is up and running with a strong band of volunteers.
The present committee is:-
Chairman: John Groves, 14 Nodes Road, Cowes, I.O.W. Tel: 01983 299221
Secretary: Christine Wilson 1 Guppy Close, Cowes, I.O.W. Tel: 01983 295764
Treasurer: David Jones 194 Newport Road, Cowes, I.O.W. Tel: 01983 298445
There are twelve further committee members.
Cowes Heritage is always ready to welcome further support in any shape or form.
